2018

August 17th 2018 - Closing date for entries into the 112th Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts (Piano & Song).

September 15th 2018 - Closing date for entries into the 112th Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts Dance Championship.

October 16th - 18th 2018 - The 112th Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts (Piano & Song) takes place at the Christchurch Sanctuary, Ilkley.

November 3rd & 4th 2018 - The 112th Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts Dance Championship takes place at Guiseley Theatre, The Green, Guiseley.

November 4th 2018 - The 112th Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts Miss Dance of Great Britain heat takes place at Guiseley Theatre, The Green, Guiseley.

November 10th & 11th 2018 - The 112th Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts Dance Championship takes place at Guiseley Theatre, The Green, Guiseley.

 

 

GENERAL RULES

 

1   The competition shall be known as ' The Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts'.

2.   All entries shall be in writing and on the form supplied. No assumed names to be used.  A separate entry form must be used for each entry.

3.   The competitions are controlled in every way by the Management Committee of the Festival, whose decision by majority vote shall be final on any matter arising from or not provided for in this syllabus.

4.   In competitions where there are two or more set pieces, no choir, band, orchestra or group will be permitted to make any alteration in its composition.

5.  Trophies may be awarded at the discretion of the adjudicator.

6.  The order of competition is by ballot.

 

PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS

7.   Conductors may be either professional or amateur. One conductor may conduct any number of choirs in the same class or otherwise. Conductors in schools' classes must not sing with their choir, which must be restricted to children.

8.   Members of choirs may be professional but they must be bona fide members of their choirs and not paid members and no member may sing in more than one choir in any one class.

9.  Professional musicians or diploma holders (performer) of any recognised School and Colleges of Music are not eligible to compete in solo classes for which their diploma applies, except for class 43.

NB. A professional musician is, generally speaking, one who earns the principal part of his livelihood by music.

10. Orchestra and bands may include ONE professional player only.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE'S RIGHTS 

11.  The Management Committee reserves the right to transfer any classes to a day or time other than that for which it is provisionally scheduled in the syllabus. 

12. The Management Committee reserves the right to withdraw any class if only one or two entries are received.

13.  The Management Committee reserves the right to disqualify any performer who is not ready to appear when called upon.

14.  The Management Committee reserves the right to disqualify any performer whose Own Choice material includes profane, offensive or otherwise inappropriate language.

TIME LIMITS AND PERFORMANCE

15.  Performers must await the signal from the Adjudicator before beginning the test piece.

16. Were time limits are stated in a class, these must be strictly observed. Failure to observe these limits may result in disqualification.

17.  The Adjudicators have power to stop (or demand a repeat of) the performance of any test piece.

GENERAL

18.  Rehearsals are not permitted in the hall in which the actual competition is to take place.

19.  Any photocopied material handed in to the Festival will be destroyed following the class.

20.  The recording of performances and adjudications is not permitted.

IN ALL CLASSES WHERE AN AGE LIMIT IS STATED, THE OPERATIVE DATE IS 1st. SEPTEMBER, 2016.

PLEASE NOTE - For the purpose of this Festival, an amateur is someone who does not derive his/her livelihood from the branch of performance, defined by the class title, in which he/she seeks to enter the Festival. In any ensemble, all members must adhere to that principle, (unless an exemption is given for that particular class.)

 

PHOTOGRAPHS OR ANY RECORDING OF CHILDREN IS NOT PERMITTED DURING THE FESTIVAL. HOWEVER, AN OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER MAY REQUEST YOUR PERMISSION FOR IMAGES TO BE USED FOR PRESS OR PUBLICITY PURPOSES.

1st September 2017 (ie the beginning of the School Year) this means

 6 years and under…………………..  YEAR 2

                 7 years and under…………………..  YEAR 3

                 8 years and under…………………..  YEAR 4

                 9 years and under…………………..  YEAR 5

                10 years and under………………….. YEAR 6

                11 years and under………………….. YEAR 7

                12 years and under………………….. YEAR 8

                13 years and under………………….. YEAR 9

                14 years and under………………….. YEAR 10

                15 years and under………………….. YEAR 11

                16 years and under………………….. YEAR 12

                17 years and under………………….. YEAR 13

 

ENTRY FEES

SOLO ENTRIES unless stated otherwise:-

Under 18 years on 1st September 2017   £5 per class subject to a maximum of £18 for 4 or more entries

18 years and over on 1st September 2017  £6 per class subject to a maximum of £22 for 4 or more entries

GROUP ENTRIES – as stated against class number.  DUETS  £6 per class

POETRY & STORY WRITING ENTRIES – as stated in Poetry & Writing section

 

COPIES OF MUSIC, POETRY OR READING

Where stated, copies of poems and music can be obtained from the Festival Secretary (Mrs Julie James). A standard charge of £1 will be made to cover all printing and postage which will be added to your entry fee.  

For OWN CHOICE pieces, adjudicator’s copies will be required in all cases. These should be brought at the time of the performance or forwarded to the Festival Secretary before 1st May 2017. Failure to produce Adjudicator’s copies may result in the participant being disqualified.

Performers should not present items which they have performed in this festival within the past three years.

Nor should the same OWN CHOICE piece be used in more than one class.

Titles giving source of work must be stated on the Entry Forms.

Please note: Care must be taken that no OWN CHOICE piece is the same as that set for any other class. Please provide a copy of OWN CHOICE additional copy if using the Festival Accompanist.

 

SYSTEM OF GRADING PERFORMANCES

This Festival has adopted a system of categories instead of marks. Certificates will be issued for all performances.

90+ OUTSTANDING an exceptional performance, both technically and artistically
87-89 DISTINCTION an excellent performance technically and artistically
84-86 COMMENDED a convincing performance technically and artistically
81-83 MERIT a capable performance showing some artistic appreciation and/or technical ability
78-80 MODERATE a performance showing development of technique and/or communication
75-77 FAIR a performance limited in its communication

 

TROPHIES

Any trophies are awarded at the discretion of the adjudicator. Special awards will be presented on the night of the Celebration Concert. All trophies are held for one year only. Holders are reminded that these should be returned no later than 20th March 2018, preferably polished and ready to re-present. Winners wishing to record their success should have the trophies engraved at their own expense before returning them. Loss of, or damage to, any trophy is the responsibility of the current holder.

 

PLEASE NOTE – THE FESTIVAL CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFETY OF CHILDREN LEFT ON THE PREMISES WITHOUT THE CARE AND SUPERVISION OF THEIR PARENTS OR OTHER RESPONSIBLE ADULT.
